What will UofL land from the portal?
A crucial offseason has started off well for the Cards. What's next?
Louisville’s season ended mercifully on March 7th. Cards fans had no time to reflect on the misery of this past season before hope was springing from every nook and cranny. As of this writing, 6 of last year’s players had announced their intentions to transfer while Louisville has landed a transfer and 2 highly regarded recruits, with several other transfer targets on the UofL radar. This feels different than last summer when the Cards would be linked to a player but interest would fizzle out from one side or the other; now the Cards are following through and landing some real players.
I’ll do a write-up on newcomers a little later in the offseason, as I want to get a better idea of the full roster and the likely roles for each newcomer before going into too much detail. In the meantime, I’ll instead focus on the near-limitless possibilities of the transfer portal and the myseries that lie within. The 6’2” midmajor scoring guard that you definitely had heard of before…is he going to be a possible all-conference performer or an inefficient shooter over his head when moving up a level? The former top-100 recruit who sat on the bench last year….does he need a change of scenery or was the hype too much? The big man who dominated in a conference where players go pro in something other than basketball…can he hold his own against players more likely to make the NBA than an MBA?
I’ll do these check-ins regulalry over the next few weeks as the portal heats up, with a focus on:
Evaluating any new names linked to Louisville
Proposing interesting players at a position of need
As you read these, I’ll frequently be comparing possible targets to one another in order to highlight differences that I think are meaningful. Most of the players I mention probably won’t end up at Louisville, but it’s worth monitoring to see if there are patterns that can predict whether players will be successful or not in new programs
For paid subscribers, I look at 3 UofL targets and propose a couple under-the-radar names…and now through June 1, you can subscribe for just $19.50/year!
